The Doha Metro
& Lusail Tram
First Public Railway Transportation Network in Qatar
Following its establishment in 2011, Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) is leading one of the largest rail projects in the world to meet the demands of Qatar’s dynamic and growing population. The company is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance of the entire network and systems.
The state-of-the-art railway network currently consists of Doha Metro, a rapid transit system connecting communities within Doha and its suburbs, Lusail Tram, a service for convenient travel within the new city of Lusail and the Long Distance Rail, which will link Qatar to the region.
In line with Qatar National Vision 2030, the integrated railway system will be affordable, reliable and convenient, changing people’s lives forever while helping to build and support the country’s growing economy.
Qatar Rail Development Program consists of 3 interconnected projects:
- Doha Metro, an underground and elevated rail network, servicing the city and suburbs of Doha. Doha Metro will have 75 trains running along 3 lines. Doha Metro has the initial capacity to carry more than 8,000 passengers per hour per direction on each line.
- Lusail Tram with 4 lines and 28 trams that connects the city of Lusail. Each line can initially service up to 1,250 people per hour in each direction. The Lusail Tram connects with Doha Metro at Lusail and Legtaifiya stations.
- Long Distance Rail, a high-speed passenger and freight network connecting the main cities in Qatar with GCC countries.
Doha Metro will be opened in sections over a period of more than a year. When the last section becomes operational in April 2020, the network will have 37 stations, with an average distance of 1.5km between stations.

Train Designs
Doha Metro is amongst the fastest driverless metro systems in the world, and will be the fastest in the region, able to reach 100 km per hour. In total, 75 trains – consisting of three cars, one of which will be for Gold and Family Class and two for Standard Class – will be delivered to Doha Metro: Gold Class will have 16 seats, Family Class has 26 seats, and Standard Class has 88 seats. Designed and built to world-class standards of modernity and innovation, they remain deeply rooted in the country’s history and community. Their dynamic shape represents the perfect symbol of intelligence and speed. The front end of the vehicle and its lines define a shape that is powerful yet elegant, while the windows are inspired by the slender eyes of local wildlife.
Lusail Tram will travel at a speed of up to 60 km per hour. In total, 28 trains consisting of five carriages split in two classes – one for families and one for general commuters. The Family Class has 24 seats, 16 are fixed and eight are foldable. In Standard Class, there are 40 seats, 32 are fixed and eight foldable, giving a total 64 seats. Both Doha Metor and Lusail tram carriages has a space for wheelchair users and there are screens on exterior walls giving details about the journey as well as entertainment. External screens are also fitted to the front, back and sides of the trains Announcing terminal station and next station to waiting passengers on the platform.
STATION DESIGN
The one of a kind design of the Doha Metro stations revolves around a contemporary ‘vaulted space’ concept; a concept that reflects on the heritage of the region by introducing open spaces that mimic traditional Bedouin tents. The design also uses ornamentations that shed light on the aesthetic elements and foundations of dynamic lighting and ventilation systems. The stations brings to life the to Qatari heritage through the use of traditional elements of Islamic and local art and ‘pearl-effect’ interiors.
